I've always been so intimidated making soap that I never tried it. The lye reminds me of a Little House on the Prairie episode where it caused the "Wild Boy" Matthew to be mute.

In our culture, we use soap nuts, also called Indian soapberry (Sapindus mukorossi) as the primary agent to make soaps. We even use these soap nuts to make shampoo. Another popular fruit used to make soaps and shampoo in our culture is Indian gooseberry.
