Leather sash belt

I have a long black leather coat that I like to wear particularly when it rains. It's got a very good lining as well, so it stays warm...the problem is that I bought it secondhand and it doesn't have a belt or any way of closing it. It just sort of hangs open. (Which is probably why I got it so cheap.)

Anyway, I'm thinking of making a simple sash belt for it and just stitching it on, somehow. Anybody know of any patterns or guidance for this?

This is a bit too feminine but you could use this as an idea to start from......

OH! I had a belt like that back in the 80s!!

I think that's the basic idea, except that I'll probably want something a lot less adorned.

Also, looking at the coat again, I'll need some way to secure it. It looks as if there has never actually been any kind of closure on this coat - no loops, ties, or anything to suggest they were ever there.

Make the belt either much less dramatically tapered or just straight until the very tips and make them pointed? Use scraps and make belt loops and hand stich them in the right place maybe get some help to make chalk marks in the right place?

I have a robe and sash the same way - I took several strands of embroidery floss, braided them and sewed them in a loop to the sides.

Unless the poster feels this will be needed, I think this is not going to be okay with some men. Great design for women, but not for men.

For the men out there, what ideas do you have to make this belt fit more towards men?
Would you have it be smaller, wider? Different color perhaps?
